1991: The start of a new era

1991 marked the end of families living permanently at the lighthouse. Staff was now reduced to one lighthouse keeper and one assistant who worked in rotation.

The National Coastal Administration then contacted Lindesnes municipality, enquiring if it could take over responsibility for the many visitors to the light station area. The municipality’s positive response is given on condition of its being able to charge admission. The lighthouse is now the county’s third most-visited tourist attraction with over 80 000 visitors every year.

At the same time the County Conservation Officer works out plans for protection and alternative uses of the county’s lighthouses in which Lindesnes is proposed being listed as a heritage site and developed as a lighthouse museum.

An independent foundation is established to administer daily activities and further planning processes.
