The Chief Engineer’s Cabin

The chief engineer looks after the ship’s engine.

The chief engineer is responsible for the vessel’s engine and other technical facilities on board: water, electricity and pumps. On the MT Oksøy, three men worked in the engine room: the chief engineer, the motor man and a cadet. The chief engineer was one of the officers together with the captain, the first officer and the steward.

Work in the engine room was noisy, hot and stuffy. The engine room staff of the MT Oksøy made sure that the engine worked as it was supposed to, that it was sufficiently lubricated and that it did
not overheat. They also made repairs whenever necessary.

The chief engineer’s cabin is located near the engine room, so that he could quickly be called there should the need arise.
