Lindesnes Lighthouse

Lindesnes, Norway’s oldest light station, was established in 1656. The 30 wax candles first used were soon replaced by an iron vat filled with burning coals set on the cliff. Two years later the station was closed due to complaints from shipping. In 1725, the light was again lit. The passing of time and traditions have altered the lamps: from an open coal-fired flare to an enclosed flare and to the present cast-iron lamps powered by petroleum, gas and then electricity.
