1954: Electric lights

Electrification meant that light intensity could be greatly increased. Light intensity is measured in candela based on the light from one wax candle. The strongest flashes sent from the lens at Lindesnes measure a staggering 3.8 million candela with a range of 36 kilometres.

In comparison to its beginnings in 1656, light intensity was increased 126 000 times in the course of 300 years.

The large 1 000-watt light bulbs originally used have since been replaced with far smaller halogen bulbs.

Automatic lamp changers were also constructed to replace light bulbs in case of power failures.
