1939: Tourists begin arriving

Until 1939 the county road stopped at the bottom of the hill up to the light- house. From there only a narrow cart road wound up to the keeper’s house where there was a little turnaround.

Maintenance of this bit of road was the duty of the keepers but because of increasing traffic by tourists in cars, this was felt to be an “unreasonable burden”.

The State therefore cedes ground so that the county road can be lengthened by 40 metres up the hill.

In 1939 the title of “lighthouse keeper” was resolved to be changed to “Master Lighthouse Keeper”.
