1879: Olaus O. Blekum

We do not have a complete record of the operating crews at Lindesnes light- house in the 1800s but Olaus O. Blekum worked here for 31 years.

In 1880 his official title was changed from Lighthouse supervisor to Light- house keeper.

A raging storm

On 29 January 1884 Blekum reported on a heavy storm to the Director of Lighthouses ...“worse than the oldest People from around here can ever recall having seen”.

It smashed one wall of the oil shed, shoved the boathouse a half-metre off its foundations and tore off the floor and most of the panelling. The dock at Stagsvika (todays dock) was also damaged while the dock at Knarvika (on the northern side of the lighthouse) was gone without a trace.

On the basis of his proposals for repairs he asks most respectfully for the reimbursement of his expenses totalling about 500 kroner.

At the same time he complains about the people living near-by who seize wreckage that drifts ashore on the lighthouse grounds and will therefore with the “utmost respect” enquire if there anything hinders having the grounds protected by law against that sort of activity.
