1854: A temporary solution

Modernization was inevitable but despite ambitious proposals a compromise was chosen.

A new lantern house with a modern, first-order lighthouse lens was placed atop the old tower.A watch room was fitted out in a little annex and a roofed track was built down along the side of the tower and the cliff for a little cart carrying the weights of the clockwork that rotated the lens.

In connection with this modernization the old living quarters were also refurbished.A wooden building was placed on the old foundations to house the keeper and his family. The cellar where you now stand, the original living room from 1821, was re-built as a washhouse.

Meteorological observations

Daily weather observations were begun at Lindesnes and 9 other Norwegian lighthouses.Today Lindesnes is the only Norwegian lighthouse where manual measurements are still carried out.
