1844: A brick tower

Lighthouse technology developed rapidly in the early 1800s.The coal-fired lamps at Lindesnes and Markøy were old-fashioned and outdated seen in relation to the Naze’s importance as an international shipping crossroads.

After the end of the Joint Monarchy in 1814the building of lights and plotting of seaways along the Norwegian coast was seen as a task of high priority.
But focus was set on the need for new stations and proposals for modernization were neglected.

The coal-fired flare on Markøy was dismantled in 1844 and the Supervisor’s house moved from Selhovden Island to the Naze.
