1821: Parabolic reflectors

Now proposals are made to build a lantern room on top of the old tower from 1799 where the fire vat is replaced by a system of small petroleum lamps and parabolic reflectors that mirrored the light.

This technology, already in use several places in Europe in the 17- and 1800s, is never implemented at Lindesnes.

French hollow-wick burners

As early as 1782 the Frenchman Aimé Argand improved the traditional oil lamp by using a hollow wick, something that led to a ten-fold increase in beam power. The so-called Armand lamp was further improved by placing several concentric wicks around each other and it was this technology, together with lens assemblies, that came to characterize developments
in lighthouse technology.
