1539: Carta Marina

Olaus Magnus was a Swedish theologian and scientist. His map of
Scandinavia was drawn in collaboration with the leading cartographers of the age from Venice.

The map is based on information he gathered as he travelled around Scandinavia selling letters of indulgence for the Pope, to finance the restoration of St Peter’s in Rome.

In addition to the map, Olaus Magnus also wrote a book of more than 800 pages describing the Nordic peoples’ lives and history.
