The Chief Steward’s Cabin

The Chief Steward is head of provisioning.

The Chief Steward is responsible for provisioning on board and has both practical duties and office work to do. The chief Steward’s cabin is located within a short distance of the galley and the mess.

On the MT Oksøy, the Chief Steward was responsible for the planning of meals and purchasing food and was head of his or her unit. The chief Steward’s most important tasks involved cooking, the washing of bedding and cleaning. The unit consisted of steward, cook and galley boy.

On smaller vessels the steward and cook may be the same person and the job title will then be cook/steward.

Steward Følsvik serves the Lighthouse director on board the MV Trænen in 1956.
