The Pump Room

The MV Gamle Oksøy was originally a tankship and named MT Oksøy. MT stands for motor tankship and there were four large oil tanks on board which could hold altogether 170,000 litres of paraffin. That equals a total of 130 tons.

The oil was pumped ashore at lighthouses along the coast. When supplying automated lighthouses, the crew pumped the oil into a tank on board the workboat (the Grisen) from where it was carried ashore.

Many automated lighthouses and beacons were gas-fuelled. In the hold, the ship carried gas cylinders containing acetylene, together with empty cylinders that had been replaced.
