The Deck

A lot of work took place on deck.

The deck of the MV Gamle Oksøy is divided across two levels. The upper deck is located above the workshop and the oil tanks. This is also where we find the workboat, the Grisen, which was used each time the crew did work on an automated lighthouse or beacon. Mounted on the mast there is a crane jib which is operated using a winch directly behind it. The jib was used for loading and unloading.

On the lower cargo deck we find the hatchway to the hold. The hatch had to be lifted off every time cargo was to be loaded or unloaded. There is a workboat on top of the hatch. Today, it is used to go ashore at places where the Gamle Oksøy is too big to moor.

There are gates in the rail that can be opened, making it easier to get to and from the workboat when it is alongside the ship.

On the lower cargo deck the crew could also perform maintenance and repairs on buoys.
