The galley

The galley is the ship’s kitchen.

All food served on board was cooked here. The galley is small, but practically fitted out and quite different to a kitchen on shore. The cooker, cupboards and drawers are constructed in such a way that pots and pans do not fly around the room in heavy seas.

Three people worked in the provisioning unit and two of them worked mostly in the galley: the cook and the galley boy. The chef did the cooking and the galley boy did the rest of the
chores: washing up, serving food and cleaning the cabins. The steward was in charge of the unit

Originally, the galley had two doors: one leading to the crew’s mess and one to the officer’s mess.
