The crew

In the beginning there was a crew of 13 officers and men on board the MT Oksøy, but this was soon reduced to 12. The twelve positions on board were:

Officers

1. Master - skipper, captain, ultimate responsibility for ship and crew
2. First Officer – mate, was responsible for the ship’s cargo and the work with aids to navigation.
3. Chief engineer - Responsible for the engine and all technical equipment on board: engine, power supplies, water, pumps, etc.
4. Chief Steward (officer) In charge of provisioning and responsible for food, bedding, cleaning, etc.

Men

5. Motor man - Crew in the engine room
6. Engine room cadet - Assistant in the engine room
7. Chef - Prepared the food on board
8. Galley boy Helped thee cook and steward, served food, did washing, etc.
9. Seaman/engine attendant - Drove the workboat (the Grisen), worked on deck and had wheelhouse watch.
10. Seaman - Worked on deck and had shifts in the wheelhouse.
11. Seaman - Worked on deck and had shifts in the wheelhouse.
12. Deck boy - Worked on deck and had shifts in the wheelhouse.

Under management by the Mate, the men on deck performed mmaintenance and worked with providing oil and gas to lighthouses and other aids to navigation.

The operation of the vessel became more and more efficient and the need for people on deck and in the engine room was reduced. With a smaller crew, there was also less to do in the galley and mess room.

When the MV Gamle Oksøy is operative today, a crew of 6 is required on board:

4. Engine attendant
5. Seaman
6. Ordinary seaman
