VTS – Vessel Traffic Services

The Norwegian Coastal Administration operates five Vessel Traffic Service Centres (VTS) monitoring marine traffic 24 hours a day. The five Norwegian VTS Centres are located in Breivik, Fedje, Horten Kvitsøy and Vardø.

The Centres help ensure safe conditions for anyone travelling at sea. If it is necessary, The Vessel Traffic Service Centres contact vessels by using VHF.

Marine monitoring can also reveal possible pollution, facilitating the implementation of necessary measures to protect the environment

Radar

In poor weather conditions or darkness, radar makes it possible to see anything in the vicinity of the ship. If there is another vessel nearby, for instance, it is possible to see how far away it is, how big it is, how quickly it is moving and in what direction.

Modern radar systems set off an alarm in the event of one vessel on collision course with another.

Radar is an abbreviation for radio detection and ranging.
