The Master’s Cabin

The master had the greatest responsibility, and the best living quarters.

The master, also known as the captain or skipper, has the ultimate responsibility on board. He or she is in charge of the ship, the crew and the work that is to be done.

On the MT Oksøy, it was the master who planned where the vessel would sail and what work should be done at any given time.

The master had the biggest cabin. Inside there was room for a desk where the master could plan what work should be done, write reports and make the necessary log entries while at sea.

The cabin was located directly below the bridge. The master had a good view forward from his cabin windows and only a short distance to vital places onboard in the event of anything unforeseen taking place.

The masters cabin and office is still used by the captain on Gamle Oksøy.

Odd Nordahl-Hansen is an experienced captain on MV Gamle Oksøy. Here he is visited by the former director of The Norwegian Coastal Administration ms Kirsti Slotsvik in 2017.
